THE VERONCIAS TAKE OVER THE WORLD
Talking about Australian Artists taking over
The Veronicas have become the first Australian group to crack the US Top 20 since 2002 with their smash hit, Untouched, taking the number 17 position in the Billboard Top 100 this week. Untouched jumped five places from number 22 taking the total number of sales to over 750,000. It’s sold a mighty 80,000 copies in the last week alone.
The last Aussie artist to enjoy Top 20 US success was Kylie Minogue with her chart-topper, Can’t Get You Out of My Head which peaked at number 7 in 2002. The Veronicas had this to say, “Feeling the energy of Untouched doing so well in America is a great feeling. It’s a different style of music to breakthrough on the American charts, and people are excited. Especially us!”
Their album, Hook Me Up, is also number 1 on the Billboard HeatSeekers Chart. It was released here in November of 2007 where it reached double platinum sales.
The head of their record label (Warner) said today that “very few Australian acts make a dent on the US or UK charts – far too few in my opinion. Hundreds of Aussies have waged an assault on the American music business and only a tiny handful have succeeded, ever. With this hit single The Veronicas are poised to join the ranks of a very small and very exclusive club. Australian fans have known about The Veronicas for four years – but now the secret is out and I truly believe they’ll conquer the world.”
The Veronicas kick off their national tour of Australia on Friday 13 February.
SHORT STACK TAKES OVER THE CITY
500+ Short Stack fans create a frenzy outside the Strand Arcade on Pitt Street Mall last night. Conducted by a huge white rabbit with a stereo, the crowd sung harmoniously to Short Stack’s new single Princess and took over Pitt Street Mall
The mall erupted as Short Stack (Shaun Diviney guitar / lead vocals, Andy Clemmensen bass / vocals and Bradie Webb drums / keyboards) appeared and joined the army of fans in one last ensemble. After countless photos and autographs Short Stack departed in a black tarago with a trail of fans behind them screaming Princess.

BITESIZE PIECES THANKS TO THEMUSIC.COM.AU

Fresh from his public feuding with Modular, Melbourne producer Muscles says he’s going to travel the world on holiday for six months.
Wolfmother aren’t revealing their new members but are apparently rehearsing for their debut at the Adelaide races next month.
Sneaky Sound System coped with Adelaide’s hottest ever Big Day Out: they cancelled all media commitments, and ventured out of their airconditioned rooms five minutes before their set, and high-tailed it back to those rooms immediately after!
Brit singer Duffy makes her official Oz debut at the Sydney Opera House and V Fest — but told the “Daily Telegraph” she actually played at the Marble Bar at the Hilton in Sydney two years ago, when she was backpacking pre-fame through Australia.

Unsigned on the air
The three winners of the Australian radio industry’s 2008 New Artist 2 Radio (NA2R) initiative Boston Shaker (rock category); Ashleigh Mannix (pop) and Emma-Louise (adult contemporary) have for the first time in the competition’s seven year history, each produced a CD single for sale in retail stores. CD art was by VGM Media and Marketing, and released through MGM. From this week, the three share in a $150,000 worth of advertising across the four major radio networks down the east coast.
“NA2R has helped launched some very successful music careers since its inception, including artists like Delta Goodrem, Kid Courageous, Sarah Blasko, Thirsty Merc, Jade Macrae and the Sunpilots,” said Joan Warner chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia.

NA2R 2007 winners have capitalised on their free advertising and airplay. The Sunpilots had their single “Spotlight in the Sun” achieve the #1 Most Added Song on radio last Feb and entered the Top 100 most played tracks on radio a month after. Cassie Davis (one half of the winning brother and sister team Six O Six) signed with Sony Music and made The Music Network’s #2 Most Added chart with strong support from 77 stations around Australia committed to play her music.
Those Madonna and Britney Rumours?
Australian promoters are poo-pooing media reports that Madonna will be here in September. “Absolute bullshit!” says one who’s close to the negotiations. International promoter Live Nation posted tour dates for Madonna and Britney Spears for Aus and Japan for September, and then yanked off quicko. In fact, the Sydney date for both singers are on the same night! Arthur Fogel, Live Nation’s Chairman of Global Music and CEO of Global Touring/Artist Nation also said there was no validity to the reports.

Auditions Alert: Project Runway
Series two of Project Runway Australia is on the hunt for its next flurry of fashion designers.
Last year Brisbane’s Julie Grbac won Arena’s reality series while FremantleMedia won universal applause for delivering an entertaining show with genuinely talented contestants.
The opportunity to showcase fashion talent is certainly a good leg up in a competitive business.
Host Kristy Hinze returns to the role, and isn’t shy in reminding us of her enthusiasm for the gig.
“2009 is going to be a massive, amazing year for me,” she said. “I am madly planning my wedding which is very exciting. After our honeymoon, I am delighted to come back home to make another season of Project Runway Australia. Last year, hosting the show was an absolute career highlight, and I am so proud to be involved in such an incredible show.
“Diving head first into my first hosting role was really challenging and the excitement of working at such a pace alongside some of Australia’s fashion elite was extremely rewarding. I loved the nervous energy you feel working in front of the camera and the thrill of the final fashion show gave me such a high. I loved it!” she said.
“Melbourne gave us a great background to create the series, and the style and substance of the city were a perfect match. I’m really looking forward to returning in April to do it all again.
“I just had a wonderful Christmas and New Year at home with Jim and my family and the buzz surrounding the second series was just amazing. We found so much talent the first time around – Australia really is a breeding ground for the designers of tommorow.”
But back to the designers… which is what the show is really all about, right?
Designers interested in being part of Project Runway should log onto www.arenatv.com.au
Applications close at 6.00 pm on Friday, 6 March 2009.
