AUSSIES OVERSEAS

Missy Higgins is off to a great start in the United States. This week her song Where I Stood cracked the Top 10 on the American AC radio charts and is Top 20 with a bullet on the equally influential HOT AC charts. Recent days have also seen an impressive jump on U.S. iTunes for both the single and her album On A Clear Night taking her total international downloads to well over the half million mark. Her MySpace page has just gone past 10 million plays and the national music channel, VH1 has Where I Stood in their top 20 most requested videos.

It’s been a long slow build for Missy overseas – built largely on nearly 200 performances in North America through 2008. However it seems that her music is now really connecting with a growing U.S. audience in a genuine way.

In February/March she will undertake her largest ever Stateside tour, headlining the 3000 capacity venue Terminal 5 in New York City, the 2000 Capacity Orpheum in Los Angeles and the legendary Filmore in San Francisco. She’ll be joined by Canadian singer/songwriter Justin Nozuka with her Australian friend Lenka opening the shows.

Missy will be heading back to Australia for her first Australian shows in almost 18 months when she hits up Bluesfest on Monday April 13, and WA’s West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots Festival on Saturday April 18 at Fremantle Esplanade

THE VERONCIAS TAKE OVER THE WORLD

Talking about Australian Artists taking over

The Veronicas have become the first Australian group to crack the US Top 20 since 2002 with their smash hit, Untouched, taking the number 17 position in the Billboard Top 100 this week. Untouched jumped five places from number 22 taking the total number of sales to over 750,000. It’s sold a mighty 80,000 copies in the last week alone.

The last Aussie artist to enjoy Top 20 US success was Kylie Minogue with her chart-topper, Can’t Get You Out of My Head which peaked at number 7 in 2002. The Veronicas had this to say, “Feeling the energy of Untouched doing so well in America is a great feeling. It’s a different style of music to breakthrough on the American charts, and people are excited. Especially us!”

Their album, Hook Me Up, is also number 1 on the Billboard HeatSeekers Chart. It was released here in November of 2007 where it reached double platinum sales.

The head of their record label (Warner) said today that “very few Australian acts make a dent on the US or UK charts – far too few in my opinion. Hundreds of Aussies have waged an assault on the American music business and only a tiny handful have succeeded, ever. With this hit single The Veronicas are poised to join the ranks of a very small and very exclusive club. Australian fans have known about The Veronicas for four years – but now the secret is out and I truly believe they’ll conquer the world.”

The Veronicas kick off their national tour of Australia on Friday 13 February.

SHORT STACK TAKES OVER THE CITY

500+ Short Stack fans create a frenzy outside the Strand Arcade on Pitt Street Mall last night. Conducted by a huge white rabbit with a stereo, the crowd sung harmoniously to Short Stack’s new single Princess and took over Pitt Street Mall

The mall erupted as Short Stack (Shaun Diviney guitar / lead vocals, Andy Clemmensen bass / vocals and Bradie Webb drums / keyboards) appeared and joined the army of fans in one last ensemble. After countless photos and autographs Short Stack departed in a black tarago with a trail of fans behind them screaming Princess.
